Hide and Seek at Lake Tekapo

by Skye Studio

A long ribbon of white cloud drifts across the rugged mountain slopes above Lake Tekapo, partially hiding the snow-covered peaks in a beautiful game of hide and seek. Beneath the mountains, the deep blue lake stretches across the foreground, its gently rippling surface creating a striking contrast with the brilliant blue sky. Sunlight catches the snowy ridges and exposed mountain faces, revealing layers of earthy brown, charcoal grey and crisp white. The cloud seems to float effortlessly between the lake and the summits, almost as though it has settled there just to admire the view.

There is something wonderfully characteristic of New Zealand about this scene. Aotearoa, often called the land of the long white cloud, seems to reveal a little of its personality here. The weather becomes part of the landscape rather than simply a backdrop, constantly changing the way we see the mountains.

For anyone who has explored the South Island, this photograph may bring back memories of those unexpected moments when the scenery suddenly becomes extraordinary. For others, it offers a peaceful escape into the alpine wilderness, where clouds wander freely and the mountains never quite reveal all their secrets.
