Gannets are birds of rough, often lightly wooded open areas. There have been no breeding pairs in the Netherlands since 1999. They feed mainly on voles and beetles, but also songbirds in winter. In the Netherlands, they hibernate from more northern regions. They can be found at all kinds of vantage points on heaths and bogs, as well as in the dunes and open marshlands. Just like other clawpits, they impale their prey on spines and barbed wire in order to build up a supply.
