Of course, this beautiful dam cannot be missing from this album of civil works of art in western America.
This photo was taken from the adjacent bridge in Highway 93, the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge to be exact. This photo was taken almost straight down from this bridge, from which you can see the shadows of the arches on the rocks.
The Hoover Dam is named after Herbert Hoover who played an important role in building the dam. First as Secretary of Commerce and later as President of the United States. The dam was built from 1930 to 1936 to prevent the Colorado River from continuing to cause flooding in Boulder Canyon. The dammed water was stored for irrigation and used for municipalities and industry. Electricity was generated from the water by 2074 megawatt generators. This power was delivered after construction of the dam to Los Angeles, 364 km away. The height of the dam is 221 meters, 200 meters thick at the base and 15 meters at the top, a total of 3.33 million cubic meters of concrete. Next to the dam, the steel composite concrete arch bridge opened in 2010. The highest arch bridge in the world, 260 meters above the river and 323 meters span.
