After the utter devastation of a volcanic eruption, there is always that little bit of hope again. That little bit of happiness that secretly emerges.
This little green fern is that symbol of hope. It emerges from the cracks in the lava to very slowly start breaking down that thick layer of destructive mass.
As the ferns slowly begin to do their work, other plants also come to find their way again and after a long, long time, the rainforest takes back this place too.
It is a trade-off between destruction and recapture. The hope.
This photo was taken at sunrise on a large lava field several decades ago on Big Island in Hawaii. A magical place where the colours of the lava appear jet black from a distance, but when you get close it suddenly turns out that this is not the case at all.
