This little shelter is on the eastern beach of the island of Terschelling. It is quiet, deserted and you can only get there on foot. It is a replica of the original drowning house that once served to shelter shipwrecked people. Many ships were lost off the coast of Terschelling, and if they managed to reach the coast they could take shelter in this little house. The black metal orb was then hoisted into the small mast and from the lighthouse they could see that shipwrecked people were to be rescued. The original cottage and the first replica of the cottage have disappeared into the sea. The beach slowly narrows on that side of the island and the cottage did not survive that. This replica is closer to the dunes and only rarely does the sea reach the cottage now. So it stands safely. Should you ever make it to the island, you'll have to put yourself out there, but the cottage is well worth a visit.
