About ‘Huế: Keizerlijke stad van Thăng Long’ by Maarten Verhees

Hue is een van de belangrijkste cultuurhistorische centra van Vietnam is de voormalige keizerlijke stad Hue. De stad is vermaard om zijn grote denkers, boeddhistische vroomheid en zijn uitstekende keuken. Ondanks verwoestingen in de Indochinese oorlogen is de stad aan de Parfumrivier nog altijd bijzonder mooi. Aan de noordkant van Hue liggen de Citadel met de Verboden Purperen Stad en de keizerlijke paleizen. Aan de zuidkant zijn pagodes, graftombes en de Frankse Wijk te vinden.De in 1993 tot werelderfgoed uitgeroepen Citadel van Hue werd in 1805 door keizer Gia Long gesticht. De enorme vesting omsluit drie concentrische steden: de Burgelijke, de Keizerlijke en de Verboden Purperen Stad. De citadel is ontworpen volgens de regels van de Chinese geomantie (waarzegkunst op basis van verschijnselen op aarde) en de militaire principes van de Franche architect Sebastien de Vauban. Het resultaat was een ongebruikelijk, maar elegant complex van paleizen, tempels, vestingmuren, bastions en grachten. In de Indochinese Oorlogen werden grote delen van de Citaldel verwoest, maar het bouwwerk is gerestaureerd.
