About ‘In the shadow of victory’ by Jeroen Quirijns

At first glance, it looks like a "verheerlijking" van Rusland, het is een bijna Marc Chagall-achtig schilderij, maar er schuilt een ander verhaal achter, dus niets is minder waar. Ik stel mezelf, steeds vaker, de vraag waar oorlog toe leidt, we kennen allemaal het antwoord; it leads nowhere! Nothing but human suffering. If we learn anything from war, it is that we learn nothing from it. Russia has produced great names in the fields of culture and literature: Pushkin, Tolstoy, Chekhov Music and ballet: Stravinsky, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky; Science; Mendeleev, Gagarin; Art and Architecture; Kandinsky, Chagall; Politics and History; Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Lenin; These names are but a fraction of what Russia has contributed to world culture. What we remember is the negative; the First and Second World Wars and Putin. Events associated with the destruction of both enemy and one’s own people due to the paranoia of the "leiders" The painting is therefore an ode to the cultural landscape that we continue to read, enjoy and listen to, which these names above have produced, and we hope that yet another senseless war will come to an end.
