About ‘India: Aarti ceremonie (Varanasi)’ by Maarten Verhees

De Aarti ceremonie wordt elke avond gehouden aan de ghats (trappen) bij de rivier de Ganges. De ceremonie heeft als doel de rivier te danken als brenger van leven. Bij de ceremonie wordt veel licht gebruikt in de vorm van kaarsje, vuurpotten, enzovoort. Er stonden 7 priesters op een rij die allemaal hetzelfde doen. De ceremonie is erg druk en de smalle straten in de oude stad zijn erg druk als je er naar toe wilt. Vertrek dus op tijd, want de ceremonie begint zodra het donker is. Je kan de ceremonie zien vanaf het water of vanaf de kant. Als je foto's wilt nemen lukt dat het beste vanaf de oever.
