About "Inner Worlds"

by Jan Keteleer

About the artwork

This painting shows how the inner world of an individual can be affected by the external world, which can sometimes seem indifferent. The woman, shown in profile, seems to be lost in her own thoughts. Her lack of interest in what's going on around her suggests she's lost in her own thoughts. On her head, you can see a city and a huge tree, built by birds that look like ravens. These birds symbolise intelligence and mystery. This surreal mix of urban and natural life shows the limitless potential of her mind, her dreams and her desires. The tree links the earthly and spiritual realms, showing how our minds can imagine things that are bigger than ourselves.
The busy city shows the many different things going on in her mind – it's like a landscape of ideas, memories and dreams. The clever, mysterious birds show both guidance and the way thoughts can go beyond what we can see. These elements encourage viewers to reflect on their own inner worlds and the uncharted territories that reside within their minds.
The painting contrasts the personal and the external, set against a calm but distant backdrop. A road winds through the background, with small figures on the edges – people looking on but not really connected. This shows the tension between feeling isolated and the possibility of engaging with others.
This work makes you feel both amazed and a little sad. It makes you stop, think and follow your own thoughts. It also makes you think about the complex mix of emotions, creativity and longing that makes us human.
