Indoor house with women near a linen cupboard, Pieter de Hooch, 1663 oil on canvas, h 70cm × w 75.5cm.
A painting full of domestic diligence from De Hooch's Amsterdam period: in a well-to-do house, two women are placing just-pressed linen in the cupboard. The women have turned up their skirts while doing the housework, so they don't get dirty. In the doorway, a child plays with a pommel stick, a kind of hockey stick. The vista behind it gives a view of brightly lit canal houses.
