Iron mills Rustenburg (North Holland) at sunrise
An iron mill is a polder mill with a very low head, which, as it were, "irrigates" the water from one boezem to the other. The term "rijkmolen" was only used in North Holland.
All string mills drained the Schermerboezem; there were originally 14 of them. When its water management was changed in 1941, the then still existing iron mills lost their function. Eight of these still exist, including these three in Rustenburg.
