This lady was the wife of the Spanish ambassador to Parma in Italy. Together with his assistants, Mengs, who was court painter to the Spanish king, painted two versions of this portrait. This copy was intended for Isabel Parreño's brother-in-law, the Spanish ambassador to the Netherlands. The Spanish costume had caused a sensation when the marquise wore it during the carnival in Parma.
