Three naval wars with England were fought between 1652 and 1674. Depicted here is the Battle of Terheide on 10 August 1653. In the centre of the painting, the largest ship of the Dutch fleet, Admiral Maerten Harpertsz Tromp's Brederode, is sailing. It fires its cannons at an English ship. The Netherlands won the battle, but lost its captain Tromp in the process.
