About ‘Jean Brusselmans Beach scene with bathers’

Jean Brusselmans painted several variations of naked women with long black hair, combing or styling their hair. For Brusselmans, this theme was a challenge to construct a composition. He depicted the bodies in different poses, landscapes and situations. For the theme of the bathers, he drew inspiration from the French tradition of Cézanne and Matisse. To emphasise the shapes and contours of his figures, Brusselmans often used solid areas of colour as a background. Sometimes the area of colour is part of the story. In Beach Scene with Bathers, the colour field stands alone in the landscape. Perhaps it is a windbreak or the wall of a beach hut. The composition of the painting is often conceived in a systematic way, like the set of a theatre.
