About ‘Jean Brusselmans Working woman’
Jean Brusselmans (1884–1953) was a key figure in Belgian modernism. He began under the influence of Impressionism but evolved towards a powerful, simplified painting style in which forms, areas of colour and matter became more important than optical reality. This is clearly reflected in this interior. The space is constructed as a structure of geometric planes: walls, floor and furniture are blocks of paint that interlock. The perspective seems deliberately flattened, making the painting almost an architectural structure. The small human figure almost disappears into the space, reinforcing the feeling of silence and contemplation. Brusselmans did not paint stories, but states of being — presence without drama. The cool palette of blue-greys and earth tones gives the work a subdued, almost meditative atmosphere. Light is not rendered realistically, but functions as a formative element. The painting balances between figuration and abstraction and shows Brusselmans' search for painting as architecture.
