This evening shot of the Kelderwindkade in Haarlem captures a special new part of the Spaarne. As soon as night falls, the warm hues of the facades light up: deep brick reds, soft browns and warm terracotta colors are enhanced by the golden glow of the street lights. Together, they reflect in the calm water, giving the city an almost fairy-tale appearance.
The contrast between the cool blue evening light in the sky and the warm orange and yellow of the windows and lights gives the image a layering that continues to fascinate. The reflection in the water doubles this effect, creating a sense of calm, balance and harmony. It is as if the city embraces itself in its own reflection.
This work appeals to a wide audience because it is more than a cityscape. Some immediately recognize the typical Haarlem building style, with its gables and variation in shape. Others are attracted to the atmosphere: a combination of liveliness and stillness, of energy and relaxation. The warm colors provide security, while the blue and grey of the sky and water add a sense of space and lightness.
For me, this work is extra special: I have lived in Haarlem for a long time and recognize in this image the atmosphere that makes the city so unique. In post-processing, I paid a lot of attention to enhancing the colors and light reflections, so that the magic of this moment comes fully into its own. A piece of Haarlem, captured as I experienced it myself.
