About the artwork

South Georgia, you can almost hear David Attenborough saying it in his iconic beautiful voice. It is one of his favourite destinations and not without reason. South Georgia is a wonderful island where you can not only see impressive landscapes and icebergs, but it is also bursting with unique wildlife. On this island, animals have taken back the reigns from humans and animal life is flourishing like never before. Once the home of whale and fur seal hunters, now animals are back in charge. Today, this unique island is home to millions of penguins, fur seals, elephant seals and countless bird species that were once almost extinct. Whales have also made a comeback in the sea around the island.

The most common penguin species on South Georgia is the iconic King's Penguin. It is the second largest species and they walk very deftly and perkily. On this island, you will find the largest colonies, some with more than 700,000 individuals.

This photo was taken at Salisbury Plain. A colony with about 120,000 penguins and a unique spot because you can get very close to the edge of the colony here. This photo I zoomed in a bit more and because there was a strong wind blowing and it was starting to snow, I tried to capture this uneasy weather by using a slightly slower shutter speed. This image also nicely shows how many penguins are on a small piece of land.
