About the artwork

It is time again to feed the nestlings of the kingfishers.

The male here has caught a fish and is heading to his nest where hungry young are waiting.

The kingfisher is a typical fish-eater and is thus strongly tied to water. Because of its preference for steep banks to nest in, they are often found near running water, as erosion naturally creates steep banks there.

Stagnant fish-rich waters with vegetation also provide an excellent habitat. The species is common throughout most of its range,

The male kingfisher has an entire black bill and the base of the female's lower bill is for the most part completely orange.

The kingfisher measures about 16 cm from beak tip to tail; the wingspan is 24 to 26 cm, and body weight ranges from 34 to 55 grams.
