Beechnuts are not only beautiful to look at, they can also be eaten. Shredded and ground into flour, they can be used for baking cookies, bread or cakes. Roasted, they are a suitable garnish for salads and other dishes. Roasting is recommended because beechnuts contain a substance called fagin. Ingested in large quantities, this substance can cause stomach aches. Roasting reduces the substance and the beech fruits can be eaten without any worries.
