About ‘La Sepultura’ by Jeroen Quirijns

This painting is * "einde" en het "begin" van het leven van Punchinello, om dit te begrijpen maken we even in sprong in het verleden; *. The figure/character originated in (the vicinity of) Naples in 1650; his birth was miraculous, having come from a turkey’s egg! Because of his leather mask, which somewhat resembles a turkey’s beak, it emphasises that this is no ordinary human being, but a comical, almost magical figure who exists outside the normal rules. The legend of the turkey’s egg is therefore primarily a folkloric explanation and not a historical fact from the commedia dell’'’arte.
La Sepultura means ‘burial’, and that is what you see in the background: Punchinello has died and is being laid to rest by his comrades; whilst in the foreground, in stark contrast, there is an announcement of new life in the form of an egg. The sepia tones in the background lend it a dramatic and historical feel, weathered yet not overly heavy. The end and a new beginning; the circle is complete.
