Hand-painted watercolour painting of Piazza Garibaldi in the town of Limone sul Garda on Lake Garda in northern Italy.
In 2010, I visited Lake Garda in the Lombardy region and the province of Brescia in Italy in early summer.
During a beautiful tour of this region, I visited the colourful town of Limone sul Garda located in the north-west of Lake Garda.
This picturesque village is all about lemons. Many places in the village have lemon trees and market stalls selling the big yellow lemons.
Lovers of Limoncello will feel very welcome here.
During a nice city walk, I took a photo of the Piazza Garibaldi square. I was very impressed by the summer cosiness of the moment, the bright and inviting colours of the restaurant with white parasols on the terrace and the green mountains. The composition of the picture appealed to me and I knew at that moment that one day I would repaint this picture in watercolour. And this idea is 'now 13 years later' a reality.
The painting has taken on a cheerful, illustrative and realistic character. I don't call my own watercolour style 'realism in an illustrative jacket' for nothing.
Piazza Garibaldi is known for its large terrace that is part of the yellow-coloured restaurant Gemma overlooking Lake Garda and the mountains beyond. The square has beautiful tiles in earthy colours laid in a curve. This gives the composition a playful perspective and depth.
Limone sul Garda is a municipality in the Italian province of Brescia on Lake Garda in northern Italy.
