Lively market scenes

by Christian Ovís

‘Lively Market Scenes’ depicts a sunny market square with fruit stalls, parasols and people amongst warm reddish-brown buildings. A tall, light-coloured tower with several overhanging roof tiers rises above the street. Beneath yellow and green awnings, round fruits are displayed in baskets and bowls. The sky is clear blue with broad white clouds. The light-coloured paving brings a great deal of warmth to the foreground.

The composition leads past the stalls towards the tower. Large baskets on the right provide a clear starting point, whilst smaller figures and façades become increasingly compact towards the background. The parasols break up the straight lines of the buildings. Yellow, orange and green accents link the merchandise with the architecture. Loose brushstrokes give the scene a painterly quality and keep the details lively without sharply defining everything.

This colourful market scene is ideal as wall art in a living room, dining room or kitchen. Ochre and terracotta combine with wood and warm neutral tones; green and blue provide a fresher contrast. Set against a plain wall, the market square comes into its own. From a distance, the tower and parasols stand out. Up close, the baskets, fruit, small figures and patches of light on the street become visible.
