James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Lowell (Massachusetts), 10 July 1834 - London, 17 July 1903) was an American painter, etcher, lithographer and writer.
Whistler was a friend of several French artists, including Édouard Manet and Antonio de La Gandara. He was also a prominent figure in the aesthetic movement, together with his friend Oscar Wilde. But he also made many enemies in his life. He cultivated these enmities by carrying out many processes, among other things. He wrote a book about it in 1890: The gentle art of making enemies.
