The Blue Mountains lori (Trichoglossus moluccanus) is a rainbow lori. This species is found in eastern Australia and Tasmania (the Blue Mountains region). There, this lori is called Swainson's Lorikeet. This bird species is also considered a subspecies of the rainbow lory, T. h. moluccanus.
The lori of the Blue Mountains has a wide distribution range and, therefore, is unlikely to achieve vulnerable (to extinction) status. The size of the world population has not been quantified. The species is still numerous in northern Australia, but rare in Tasmania. The species is declining in numbers due to live capture. However, the rate of decline is below 30% over 10 years (less than 3.5% per year). For these reasons, the bird is listed as non-threatened on the IUCN Red List. There have been restrictions on trade in this lori since 1981, as the species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Convention.[1]
