About the artwork

Rotterdam, Maas Tunnel escalators for cyclists and pedestrians.
Through these escalators, cyclists and pedestrians descend to the tunnel tube, which connects Rotterdam South with the city center.
For some it is a treat, for others hell, because of the very steep inclination of the wooden escalators. But few cyclists and pedestrians are not impressed by these steep wooden escalators in the Maastunnel. Both up, and down, these wooden escalators give you the feeling that you could fall down at any moment. Especially with a bicycle in hand, it takes some bracing before the ascent, or descent begins.
These wooden escalators are one of the very few escalators still in working order worldwide.
This therefore makes this a historically quite unique and precious tunnel entrance. A beautiful icon of character that helps make Rotterdam a city worth seeing.
Keeping these escalators running requires about 7000 idlers, which were recently replaced after 80 years.
Because the entire Maas Tunnel is a monument, as much as possible was restored with parts that would not detract from the originality of these very beautiful escalators. The photo captures the depth one experiences while going down.
A true Rotterdammer can agree and recognize this.
A beautiful monument to be proud of as a city and as a Rotterdammer.
