A beautiful double sculpture in camphor wood of 2 ibises.
These statues stood in the walled cemeteries of the Sakalava, an ethnic group from western and north-western Madagascar.
The pose of the birds, facing each other, symbolises the connection between life and death but also the continuation of life by creating new life as a couple. They also provide spiritual protection and remembrance of ancestors.
