About "Mælifell: Iceland's majestic volcano"

About the artwork

Far away from the hustle and bustle of civilisation, in the south of Iceland, Mælifell rises from the black sandy plain of Mýrdalssandur. This volcanic cone is a true natural wonder and one of the island's most iconic mountains. At 791 metres high, Mælifell seems to watch over the surrounding landscape like a green giant. Its vast, green cover contrasts beautifully with the dark, volcanic earth that surrounds the mountain.

Mælifell is a remnant of the intense volcanic activity that shaped Iceland. The mountain was created during an eruption under the ice of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier thousands of years ago. The green we see today is the result of Iceland's harsh climate, which in spring and summer covers the mountain with moss and grass, while winter envelops Mælifell in an intoxicating white blanket.

The mountain is accessible via the F roads, rugged mountain trails that make the journey to this remote part of Iceland an adventure. The pristine nature and impressive vistas along the way make the journey an unforgettable experience. This photo brings to life the serene power of Mælifell - a moment captured in time, when nature shows its full strength, surrounded by the eternal, azure sky.
