Magdeburg Cathedral was built in several stages from 1209 to 1520. It is thus one of the (few) large medieval buildings that - despite interruptions of many years - were actually completed by the beginning of the Reformation. The massive structure was begun in 1209 with its eastern parts of the choir area, and construction on the western parts began around 1250/1260.
The west portal was built from about 1310, and when the cathedral was consecrated in 1363, the portal and the west facade were completed up to the first gallery. This was followed by a pause in construction lasting over a hundred years, and it was not until 1477 that construction continued and the towers and the upper intermediate area were completed by 1520. This date is carved above the door of the top gallery of the north tower.
