Pier 1 in Brooklyn is the largest and most iconic part of Brooklyn Bridge Park, which stretches along the East River. The park opened in 2010 on the former industrial and port facilities, which once played a crucial role in New York's maritime trade. The area was used for decades for cargo handling, but towards the end of the 20th century the piers fell into disrepair as port activities shifted to more modern terminals elsewhere. The transformation of the industrial site into a public park was an important part of the redevelopment of the Brooklyn waterfront, which began in the early 2000s.
Today, Pier 1 offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. The park itself contains lawns, walkways, and seating areas that are a popular destination for recreation and events. The redevelopment has created a major tourist attraction. Pier 1 no longer exists and is recognisable only by the many pilings visible at low tide. They offer a nice foreground to the beautifully lit offices on Lower Manhattan.
