At an altitude of 4,478 metres, the majestic Matterhorn - probably the most famous mountain in Europe - stretches out in a breathtaking Alpine panorama. Switzerland's freestanding landmark lies on the border of the western Swiss canton of Valais - between Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia in Italy.
Matte + Horn = Matterhorn. In fact, the name is thought to derive from "Matte", meaning the grassy valley below the Gorner Gorge. The part where the village of Zermatt ("zur Matt") is located today. And "Horn" - that's what the local population likes to call the Matterhorn. The Italians, on the other hand, know it by the name "Monte Cervino".
