About ‘Mauve’ by Sandra ter Horst

‘Mauve’ is part of the STILL series, a series about those moments when the outside world briefly fades into the background. With her eyes closed and a subtle smile, the woman appears to be completely absorbed in her own world. Her face is painted in a refined and recognisable style, whilst her body gradually dissolves towards the bottom into loose brushstrokes, colour and texture. Warm shades of mauve, burgundy, pink and earthy tones blend into one another.

My inspiration for ‘Mauve’ stems from my fascination with inner peace: that moment when we do not need to show, explain or prove anything. The gentle expression deliberately contrasts with the rougher, abstract style in which the body is painted.

The work is built up from an intuitive acrylic underlayer, after which I continue working with oil paint and, finally, oil pastels and chalk. I carefully refine some parts, whilst deliberately leaving others open and imperfect.

Thanks to its warm, muted colour palette, ‘Mauve’ brings a sense of calm to an interior, whilst the expressive layers of paint reveal ever-changing new details when viewed up close. A work about gentleness, presence and the freedom to simply be.
