All the way in the south of the South Island are the Catlins. Most tourists ignore this area because it is too far off the standard routes. But if you have enough time it is definitely worth a visit. You'll find rugged beaches where with a little luck you can spot penguins and dolphins but also the interior is worth a visit with some beautiful waterfalls. One of the most beautiful waterfalls is the McLean waterfall, beautifully situated in the greenery. From the parking lot you walk about fifteen minutes through the rainforest to finally arrive at this 22-meter high waterfall that, beautifully situated in the green, flows down through a number of terraces.
