The #35 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 "Rote Sau" AMG won its class at the 24-hour race in Spa-Franchorchamps on 25 July 1971 and finished second overall with drivers Heyer and Schickentanz, thus suddenly achieving world fame.
A five-speed manual gearbox with a racing clutch, 428 hp and a maximum torque of 620 Newton metres and a top speed of 265 km/h made this victory possible after Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher converted a W 109 accident car.
