About the artwork

Clemente Orozco's deeply skeptical view of the bastions of civilization is reflected not only in his murals, but also in his prolific sketches and easel work. Religious dogmas were especially censored by his brush and his one hand, because he had only one hand. The ancient Olympian gods did not escape the painter's caustic interpretations, and he devoted work on several canvases to questioning, satirical, Western decadence. Parnaso mexica con catrinas de pulquería, as this piece is called in the Blaisten collection, provides insight into how Orozco's universal aesthetic works, combined in a vast farce Greco-Latin culture with the vices and excesses of pulque, the alcoholic beverage that gods bestowed upon the ancient Mexican people. Because of its critical view of the pre-Hispanic world, this play is closer to the Teules series, as well as the cabaret scenes of the 1940s.

José Clemente Orozco (Zapotlán El Grande, Nov. 23, 1883 - Mexico City, Sept. 7, 1949) was a Mexican painter. He became known for, among other things, his murals in the tradition of Mexican muralism. His work is considered an expressive form of social realism.
