The MiG-17 was the successor to the successful MiG-15. Its development began in 1949. The aircraft was designed to overcome the 15's shortcomings at high speeds. The main innovation was the use of corner wings. Together with the redesigned tail, these provided more stability at speeds above Mach 1. The MiG-17 also received a new turbojet with afterburner copied from Rolls-Royce.
