On the banks of the river Geeuw, in the Frisian town of IJlst, stands wood sawmill De Rat - a living monument of craftsmanship and tradition. In the soft winter light, the mill casts its reflection in the still water, while dark clouds coalesce over the landscape. The silence of the moment is broken only by the gentle rustling of reeds and the crackling of wood in the wind.
The Rat still saws wood on wind power. The mill is unique in that it has remained fully operational: oak wood is cut here for shipbuilding, exactly as it was centuries ago. The adjacent miller's house and the white wooden bridge reinforce the characteristic Frisian image of water, craft and sobriety.
This shot captures not only the beauty of the historic mill, but also the stillness of a winter day in the Frisian water world - where past and nature seem to be in balance.
