This photo shows a historic landscape with windmills and a drawbridge in a typical Dutch landscape. The Alblasserwaard area of Kinderdijk is home to 19 windmills, whose original purpose was to keep the water level in the polder's storage basins and values at the desired level. The drawbridge in the foreground leads to the monumental museum windmill, which can also be visited. Of these 19 windmills, 1 is located outside Kinderdijk in the municipality of Alblasserdam. This is the Blokkerse Molen.
This mill is different in shape and, as a type of mill, is referred to as Wipmolen.
The mills are all cultural heritage and therefore monumental. Every year, the mills attract many tourists from all over the world because of the rare and beautifully preserved piece of historic landscape.
