The Fountain of the Giant (Fontana del Gigante) is a monumental fountain in Naples that was designed in the 16th century by Michelangelo
designed by Michelangelo Naccherino and Pietro Bernini for the Royal Palace of Naples. It has been located on the Via Partenope coastal road near the Castel dell'Ovo since 1905. This photo was taken shortly before sunset.
The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways that have a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
Mount Vesuvius is currently the only active volcano on the European mainland. It is located on the Gulf of Naples in the Italian region of Campania, nine kilometres from the city of Naples. Vesuvius is 1,281 metres high.
