The Nieuwe Rijn is a 2.3 km long branch of the Oude Rijn in Leiden.
The Old and New Rhine separate west of Leiderdorp near the Leiden Value Island and come together again in a canalized form in the centre of Leiden. The city of Leiden originated on the land point on this side; the hill with the castle built on it can still be reached from both the New and the Old Rhine.
In the city centre of Leiden there is a market every Saturday and Wednesday along the Nieuwe Rijn river. In the spring and summer months the catering establishments have their terraces along the river and on (terrace) boats the water. Here the water also flows under the famous Koornbrug and after the Visbrug it flows together with the Oude Rijn again.
The Hartebrugkerk is a church in Leiden and part of the parish of Saints Peter and Paul. The official name is Our Lady Immaculate Conception. The church is named after the bridge in front of it with the same name. Among the people of Leiden, the church is also known as the Cole Church, after the Latin proverb above the entrance, Hic Domus Dei est et Porta Coeli (This is the house of God and the gateway to heaven).
