The Omarama Clay Cliffs, also known as the Ahuriri River Clay Cliffs and the Clay Cliffs Paritea are a group of cliffs in southern New Zealand. They are located close to the north bank of the Ahuriri River, some 10 km to the west of the township of Omarama. The cliffs serve as a tourist attraction in the area and they are privately owned. There is a fee to park.
The tall sharp pinnacles are very impressive, and the narrow ravines are fun to walk through and make for some really cool photos. The clay cliffs are said to be almost two million years old and are made up of layers of silt and gravel. Geological activity has pushed the layers up, and after many years of erosion, sharp pinnacles formed. Some of them are up to 30 meters tall.
The best time to visit would be in the morning when the sunlight is nice and soft.
