Giraffes (Giraffa) are a genus of even-toed mammals in the family of Giraffidae whose representatives are found in Africa. They are known for their long necks and the pattern of spots on their fur.
The word giraffe comes from the Italian word giraffa derived from the Arabic word zarāfa, which in turn was taken from an African language. The Romans called the giraffe camelopardalis, which literally means camel leopard. This name is still found in Afrikaans (kameelperd) and formerly in Dutch (kameelpardel).
