About the artwork

The Opel Ascona B was produced from 1975 to 1981 and was the second generation of the Opel Ascona. With exactly 1,296,487 new customers, it was the most successful Opel of all time. It was introduced as the successor to the Opel Ascona A and was available as a saloon and estate. There were no cabriolets, but there were a few customised models.

The Opel Ascona B was successful both on the road and in motorsport. In the 1970s and 1980s, Opel dominated the World Rally Championship with the Ascona B. Drivers Christian Geistdörfer and Walter Röhrl won several rallies with the Ascona B and secured the world championship title.

The Opel Ascona 400, which was specially developed for rallying, is particularly well known. With its powerful engine and sporty chassis, the Ascona 400 was very successful on the rally tracks. Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer celebrated numerous victories with the Ascona 400 and made a significant contribution to Opel's success in rallying. In 1982, the pair won the World Rally Championship in an Opel Ascona B 400, their strongest opponent being Michele Mouton, albeit with four-wheel drive in an Audi Quattro.
