Tips for use

About ‘Orangutan crab @ Komodo, Indonesia’ by Travel Tips and Stories

The orangutan crab (Achaeus japonicus) is one of the most bizarre and photogenic crabs you might encounter whilst diving in Komodo, Indonesia. This miniature crab owes its name to its striking appearance, which bears a striking resemblance to the red-haired great ape of the Indonesian jungle.

Why it is so special
Hairy camouflage: The crab’s body and long legs are completely covered in thick, bristly, reddish-brown hairs. These hairs not only protect it from the current, but also trap floating algae and plankton, which the crab uses as food.
Host: The orangutan crab lives in a symbiotic relationship with bubble coral (Plerogyra sinuosa) or mushroom coral. It spends virtually its entire life amongst the tentacles of this coral, where it is perfectly protected from predatory fish.
Size: Despite its striking head of hair, the crab is tiny. Its carapace is often only 1 to 2 centimetres in size, so you need a keen eye (or a good guide) to spot it.

The best dive sites in Komodo
Because these crabs are strictly tied to their host coral, they are very sedentary. Local dive guides in Komodo often know exactly where to find them at the following spots:
Wainilu: The absolute hotspot for macro life (muck diving) in Komodo. Between the sandy bottom and the coral blocks, you’ll find bubble coral with its inhabitants relatively easily here.
Siaba Besar: Known for its calm sandy flats and healthy coral gardens in the sheltered bay, where many macro-organisms take refuge.
Tatawa Besar: A dive site with beautiful, expansive coral fields where many large colonies of the specific bubble coral grow.
