On the beach, near the North Holland town of Petten, stands the Palendorp, a work of art and monument consisting of 160 poles of different heights. The poles form the silhouette of ten houses and a church. They symbolise the old village 'Petten bi der Sipe' that existed since 1300, but disappeared into the sea from 1792. As the sand will slowly calve away over the next few years, the poles will rise further and further into the water.
