Walking through the streets of Paris, the Metro or Metropolitain is never far away. The signs that announce that this is where the metro station is have a different look in every city, but those in Paris fit very well into the streetscape of the city of lights. There is something nostalgic about the bright red sign with the white letters METRO on a cast-iron classic pole with its round ball of light.
Opened in 1900, the metro network now has 16 lines with 320 stations and carries some 1.5 billion passengers a year, making it Europe's second busiest metro after Moscow. The photo with the typical Parisian architectural style in the background complements the picture, which unmistakably depicts an image of Paris.
