Paul healing the cripple in Lystra, Karel Dujardin, 1663 oil on canvas, h 179cm × w 139cm × d 9cm.
Dujardin not only painted landscapes with Italian flair, but also large history paintings based on Italian examples. Here, the apostle Paul rises high above a bunch of sick people. When he heals a cripple in the name of the Christian god, the bystanders mistake him for the pagan god Mercury. Dujardin understands the art of making a scene exciting with pathetic gestures.
