One of the most popular but not to be underestimated hikes on Madeira is this one from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. The island's third highest and highest mountain peak respectively. After each turn, you encounter breathtaking landscapes that look different each time depending on the weather conditions and the angle through which you look at the landscape.
In this picture, you can see the different layers of the rugged mountainous landscape. In the foreground one of the many whitewashed trees that can be found around Pico Ruivo, in the middle the green valley, which is only accessible for the various bird and animal species and in the background the bare rock-like mountain landscape.
What is normally a one-and-a-half to two-hour hike, was now a three-hour hike because I kept stopping to take photos :p.
