About ‘Pierrot’ by Jeroen Quirijns

A serious-looking Pierrot, or is he? Pierrot is usually dressed in white, but in this case he’s wearing a Harlequin costume.
In the Commedia dell’'arte heet Pierrot;, Pedrolino. He falls in love with Colombina, but she dumps him for Arlechinno – though in the end he doesn’t get her either.
You might assume that I’ve combined the two characters into a single costume. Pierrot gazes into space, savouring a glass of absinthe, pondering his lost love? He is sitting on the green plush and his hand is holding a spot free, waiting to see if Colombina will still come?
The colour combination works well; the face does not fade into the background, precisely because of the black headdress, whilst the collar is emphasised by the dark green colour.
If you look closely, you can clearly see that the paint has been applied "dik en vet", particularly on the face – you might say it’s been gently plastered on.
In this painting, you’re free to let your imagination wander over the story, the still moment...
