This illustration shows a group of piping plovers following the coastline, always looking for food washed to shore by the waves. If you look closely, you can also see a youngster walking alongside the adult birds, a small, charming detail that captures the natural social dynamics of these birds.
Spotted plovers are shorebirds often found on sandy and shingle beaches. They are known for their typical behaviour where they run back and forth along the waterline in search of small insects, molluscs and crustaceans exposed by the receding water. This 'chasing along the shoreline' is a characteristic behaviour by which they gather their food. The adult birds protect their young by keeping them close to the group, which I have tried to depict in my illustration.
