In the endless expanse of the Sinai Desert lie these mysterious stone structures: the nawamis. Built of stacked sandstone slabs, they are among the oldest known stone buildings in North Africa. Presumably, they date from the Chalcolithic era, between 4000 and 3150 BC.
This image shows several nawamis in the warm light of late afternoon. The stone layers turn reddish-brown in the sun, while the sand and rocks in the foreground deepen the image. The structures seem to blend harmoniously into the landscape, as if they have always been there.
The nawamis give this place an almost timeless character. They raise questions about their original function and the people who built them, but also allow themselves to be experienced simply in silence. This sculpture captures that moment of peace, history and connection with the earth, a silent testimony to what once was.
